My First Day At Pehchaan The Street School – Achint Kaur

“EDUCATION is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”-NELSON MANDELA

Living in the dazzle of our expeditious lives, never do we ponder over the fact that despite being the 5th largest economy in the world around 35 million children aged 6-14 years do not get the opportunity to go to school.

At the age when children are supposed to get educated, they are beaten, maimed to beg on streets, forced to work as labors with a mere chance of a stable future.

In the gleam of those brand new shiny colorful notebooks, with the fragrance of thousands of fresh blossomed pages, we forget the fact that in a world different than our, children are devoid of even a pinch of the same. It is high time that we, the commoners, address the issue because when the rights of children are at stake, there should be no silent witnesses. This belief motivated me to work and rectify it at my level.

Then I came across Pehchaan The Street School, which gave me and many others a platform to make a difference.

I saw passion, determination and will in those tiny tots, when I paid my first visit to the Pehchaan center. It was a great opportunity because along with hunger for knowledge, I saw dreams in those twinkling little eyes and along with pehchaan, I made it my duty to help them to reach their dreams. It is said “education is not the answer to the question, but is the means to the answer to all questions”.

Pehchaan The Street School works day and night to provide these children with such means. Education is the route out of poverty for many children. It gives them a chance to gain the knowledge and skills needed to improve their lives. But millions of children never see the inside of a classroom. Less than half of India’s children between the age 6 and 14 go to school. A little over one-third of all children who enroll in grade one reach grade eight. 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9years are illiterate. In India, only 53% of habitation has a primary school and 20% of habitation has a secondary school.
